Death of a Legend

There's no reason why you'd know this, but if an animal chews on a bunch of lichen, it can take a century to grow back! That's the kind of detail that emerges from this interesting documentary on the Canadian wolf. We start with the usual story of human pioneering destroying all in it's path. Our settlements then becoming paranoid about this predator and so determined to physically eradicate it whilst simultaneously carrying out a psychological hatchet-job on it's image. That's led to a continuing battle between people and wolves - but are they our natural enemy? Sure, people would not have an hope in hell in an one-on-one, but we have guns, traps, and poisons. It's hardly ever going to be fair fight. This film tries to establish also if our constant expansion has caused their national habitat to shrink and their natural prey to decline to such an extent that these animals have little choice but to frequent farms and feed off animals not native to their land or their diet. We proceed to follow a pack of wolves in an untouched natural habitat and explain that they are not the "Red Riding Hood" animals of lore, but instead familial, territorial, social and intelligent creatures doing what they need to survive in an environment that quite literally is dog eat dog meets survival of the fittest. I could have done without the rather annoying folky soundtrack but Stanley Jackson's narration manages to put questions to us and offer answers in quite an informative fashion. The photography and the audio are astonishingly intimate. They get to the heart of these ice-bound locations and showcase the beautiful yet perilous scenery effectively as these often playful and sociable creatures move from the frigid expanses of the prairie to the dense forests in search of food to to rear their young - the females gestate for a mere nine weeks and can have up to ten cubs raised on a diet of regurgitated food. The title is double-edged. Are we taking about a legend of fear and suspicion which ought to die or one of a beast that's a natural part of the equilibrium of nature that's on the brink?

1991-01-01Marvel at "Old Faithful" erupting, vast rolling forests, abundant wildlife, thundering waterfalls, gurgling hot springs and mud pots, and the beautiful, haunting wilderness. Over 2.2 million acres located in the northwest corner of Wyoming, the great Yellowstone National Park was founded in 1872. The superb camera work of Dale Johnson and Bob Landis captures the natural wonders that captivated the early mountain men of the 1840s: petrified forests, mountains of glass and rivers that cooked fish. Thrill to rare and dramatic wildlife action; an antelope doe chasing a coyote from her young, a grizzly pursuing an elk in a life and death chase, a coyote matching wits with an otter; northern elk migrating in deep snow and bighorn sheep in mating battles. See the Yellowstone fire of 1988, and the charred land in full bloom. Ride with a park range into the backcountry. Enjoy a stagecoach ride to a sunrise cookout. It's all here, the magic of the great Yellowstone.Šumavská suita

2014-04-23In the frigid valleys of Japan's Shiga Highlands, a troop of snow monkeys make their way and raise their families in a complex society of rank and privilege where each knows their place. Their leader is still new to the job and something of a solitary grouch. But one little monkey, innocently unaware of his own lowly social rank, reaches out to this lonely leader, forming a bond with him that manages over time to warm his less than sunny disposition. It is a rare and remarkable gesture that alters both their lives. Changing seasons bring new babies to care for, a profusion of insects and blossoms to eat, family disagreements to squabble over and tragedies to overcome. Mating season brings competition for females, as the days grow shorter and colder in a rush toward winter. But with their now confident leader to guide them and their families to shelter and care for them, this troop of snow monkeys is ready to face the world.Pica Pica
1987-03-14In Pica Pica Kristersson invites the viewer to be enthralled for an hour and a half by the vicissitudes of magpie life. Opposing himself to the current nature films that tend to highly compress time in order to end up with a concentrated sequence of action-elements Kristersson leaves rhythm and tempo almost completely up to the magpies themselves. With great integrity he filmed the daily, social and emotional life of a species of birds that has many points of contact with human life. Thus, the movie offers us the oppurtunity to view our own everyday existence through other eyes, from a world right above our heads, but yet so far away.Nature: Great Zebra E...
2013-05-15Each year, far from human eyes, a remote expanse of Botswana's Makgadikgadi salt pans hosts one of Africa's last great spectacles when thousands of striped nomads wander the breathtakingly beautiful but barren landscape. It is only by the grace of isolated summer rains that the zebras can survive here at all. Family groups gather together to follow the rains, driven by a constant search for better grazing on islands of grass that dot the pans. Meerkat families watch the zebras come and go, and families of lions wait for them along their grueling trek, hoping for a chance to bring one down. Their journey is one that is sometimes limited by the fragility of new life, but always made possible by the strong family ties that help animals survive in one of Africa's most surreal landscapes. It's a tale of loyalty and sacrifice, of home and exile, of death and new life, in southern Africa's largest zebra population. At the Edge of the Wo...
2008-10-03At the Edge of the World chronicles the controversial Sea Shepherd Antarctic Campaign against a Japanese whaling fleet. The international volunteer crew, under-trained and under-equipped, develop a combination of bizarre and brilliant tactics with which to stop the whalers. But first they must find the Japanese ships, a far more difficult challenge than ever imagined - long-time activist Paul Watson and first-time captain Alex Cornelissen employ an array of strategies in the hopes of finding an elusive adversary in the vast expanse of the Ross Sea. With one ship (the Farley Mowat) too slow to chase down the whaling fleet, with their second ship (the Robert Hunter) unsuited for Antarctic ice conditions and with no country supporting their efforts to enforce international law, the situation becomes increasingly desperate. Against all odds, however, a real-life pirate tale unfolds - a modern-day "David vs. Goliath" adventure.2012: Time for Change...
