For a man so respectful of the old ways, he does find himself in some unlikely places - like a dance hall in Rio de Janeiro! And personally, if I saw him anywhere I'd leave quickly because you just know that someone is about to drop dead, too. He's there with No.2 son "Jimmy" (Victor Sen Yung) and local policeman "Suoto" (Harold Huber) on the trail of the dodgy singer "Lola" whom our sleuth believes killed her lover back in Hawaii. Sparing her blushes, he hopes to follow her to her apartment and arrest her there - but some sinister forces are afoot and by the time they arrive, she's a goner. There are no shortage of clues as he must try to filter through the evidence and the red herrings to get to the truth. Whilst pop is doing his detecting, the young "Jimmy" is falling in love with the maid "Lili" (Iris Wong) - that is, when he's not accusing just about everyone and coming up with a constant stream of prognostications that are all as daft as the other. The theme of this story includes some quite enjoyable hypnotising, with a sip of coffee and a suitably laced cigarette exposing the victim to a slew of truths that might elicit a confession - but to everything from murder to dodging maths class! The "Rio" aspect really just allows for some different costumes and a few Hispanic accents, otherwise it's all standard fayre - but I did enjoy it.

Jethro Tull: Living With The Past
    2002-05-14
A veritable feast awaits fans of Ian Anderson's Jethro Tull on this elaborate DVD package, which boasts extensive concert footage and a load of extras. The focal point is nearly two hours of performances, filmed in late 2001 (primarily in London, with additional material from several other locations) and featuring material from the band's entire lengthy career, including such staples as "Aqualung" and "Bouree." The current Tull incarnation (featuring, as always, Anderson on vocals, flute, and sundry other instruments) takes center stage; there are also a couple of numbers with a string quartet, and even a small-club reunion of the lineup that made the group's very first album back in 1968. Interviews with band members, testimonials from rabid fans, photos, and even an option for viewing a Tull performance from three different audience points of view are among the generous helping of extra features.

Ragat (Blood) is a powerful Nepali film that highlights caste discrimination and social injustice. The story follows Krishna, a young man from a lower-caste family, who bravely fights against the oppression of the rich and upper-caste elites. Hemant Kaji, a wealthy and influential man, strongly believes in caste superiority and looks down on the poor. Amidst this division, Laxmi, a girl from a rich family, falls in love with Gopal, a lower-caste boy. Defying societal norms and family pressure, they marry against their parents' wishes, challenging the rigid caste system. Their love becomes a symbol of change, but their struggle is met with resistance. In the end, Radha, Laxmi's caring aunt, tragically loses her life, leaving behind a message that all human blood is the same-hot and red. Directed with a strong social message, Ragat questions why caste discrimination still exists in Nepali culture and calls for equality and justice.
