Boone Stallard, elected to the Kentucky Legislature by a mountain district, clashes with Randolph Marshall, a Blue Grass aristocrat who is engaged to Anne, the governor's daughter. When a feud breaks out in the mountains between the Keatons and the Stallards, Boone returns home and with the help of Marshall restores law and order; later, Marshall obtains a commutation of the sentence of Stallard's brother, who has been condemned to death. Boone, now realizing the differences between a rugged, simple mountaineer and an aristocrat, decides not to ask Anne to marry him.

When Lola finally confesses her activities to Frank, Kube kills her and then frames Frank for the murder. Tom Whitney, well connected but a social derelict because of his weakness for drink, is released from the draft because of an old football Injury, but a policeman persuades him that he can still do his bit in the shipyards. He takes a job in the yard owned by the man to whose daughter he was engaged in happier times. Three German propagandists seek to foment a strike to delay the work, and largely through Tom's efforts the plan goes amiss and the strike is called off. The husband of Mrs, Cranston is in tight quarters. He is caught both "short" in funds and in stock. In order that he may be able to cover up his margins, he decides to rob his wife's jewels. He plans to do so, but his wife anticipates him and steals the jewels herself, she having reason to believe that he would attempt the crime in a moment of weakness. The husband, when he finds that his wife's jewels are missing, raises a "hue and cry," and the police take up the case. After considerable investigation, the crime is traced to Mrs. Cranston.
